Planned Preventative Maintenance – keeping businesses running this winter

Planned-Preventive-Maintenance

With winter 2014 predicted to be the ‘coldest for a century’ (or wettest, depending what you read) we  are urging businesses to implement a strategic approach to the maintenance of plant and machinery through ‘Planned Preventative Maintenance’ (PPM), to minimise the risk of damage from potential sub-zero temperatures, while generally keeping equipment running efficiently and stopping expensive downtime.

Don’t react, plan

Maintenance is often ‘reactive’, undertaken once equipment has failed or is becoming less efficient. However, plant and machinery represent a major investment for any business and it is vital these assets are properly maintained. Time is quite literally money so anything that can be done to stop downtime will have a knock-on effect to a business’ profitability.

If you supply or store fuel on-site, for example, the winter months could see tanks and pipes more liable to damage as temperatures plummet. Regular checks and maintenance procedures can prevent such incidents from occurring, but only if the correct measures are in place.

Putting into practice a ‘predictive’ Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) programme could help firms reduce total building costs by up to 50 per cent, as well as extending equipment life, reducing energy consumption, and minimising disruption and costly downtime.

Schedules are based on the actual equipment and the environment in which they operate. By laying out clear planned maintenance operations, breakdowns and failures can be minimised, if not stopped, by preserving and enhancing equipment reliability, resulting in peace of mind for business of all sizes.
