The Project


Adler and Allan carried out the annual cleaning and servicing of the bunds and bund water control units at Sellindge Converter Station in Kent in November 2011. We recommended using the Sockit Filtration System, our innovative filtration system that cleans contaminated water as it is pumped away.

The Solution


We used the Sockit system to filter all water in the bunds at Sellindge, as well as the water used in cleaning and washing the tank units. Our proposal to use the Sockit System was based on its cost-saving benefits and the reduction in carbon emissions that would result from reducing the number of vacuum tanker movements needed to remove and dispose of oily water.

The Sockit system is portable, so it is easy to move to different bund locations without the need for height clearance. There were also fewer escorted vacuum tanker movements around the substation, as we used a smaller portable vacuum tank that is less than 2.3m in height. Since it was possible to leave all equipment on site during our attendance, our team could be more focused and did not lose time waiting for vacuum tankers.

The Outcome


The initiative brought cost savings of around 60% by reducing the use of vacuum tankers and reducing the cost of waste removal away from the site. It made a contribution to National Grid’s carbon reduction targets.
