The Project


The client had two bunds located just metres away from the River Irk in Manchester that were leaking oily water and other pollutants and in danger of an environmental disaster. Blocked drains were causing major issues with overflowing oil, and there was only a single sump for both bunds.

The Solution


The client had attended a recent Adler & Allan live Demonstration Day and was impressed with the JBAR® (Joint Bund and Raising) System and the instant benefits of the Adalline® 400 spray lining. JBAR is a semipermanent GRP bund raising system that is low-cost, quick to install, lightweight but strong, to contain both oil and chemicals and withstand flooding. Following consultation with A&A experts, the client included both systems on their final design. A 300mm GRP JBAR was installed onto the existing construction, raising the height of the bunds, which were then lined with A&A’s Adalline 400 polyurea protective coating. To ensure regular scheduled maintenance could be carried out safely, an anti-slip finish was added to the surface providing a non-slip pathway. A&A experts advised the client that the singular sump was not sufficient to serve both bunds to avoid overflow of pollutants, it was agreed that each bund should have its own sump. New bund water control units were also fitted to each sump. The pump within the sump unit differentiates between oil and water, ensuring that only water is pumped out, protecting the environment from pollution.

The Outcome


By opting for A&A’s complete solution rather than using several contractors to achieve the same result, the client was able to reduce costs and time on-site, as well as take advantage of A&A’s unique design capabilities. The work was completed in less than eight days and the client was extremely happy with the end result.
