Bund and tank lining

Adler and Allan recommend extending the working life of your storage tanks and bunds by re-lining with GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic).

Bunds often become damaged due to the effects of age, minor accidents and other occurrences, thus losing their ability to contain constant drips and spillages. This can result in seepage through the base and walls of the bund and subsequent soil contamination. The implications of this occurring could be very damaging to the environment and under the Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) Regulations 2001.

Leaking and corroded tanks can cause damage to the environment and to the health and safety of personnel, and in turn will affect company profitability.

If this problem is not addressed promptly there will come a day when you find it necessary to purchase a new tank, thus incurring the cost of re-piping and removal/disposal of your old tank; all unnecessary expenditure. If you have your tank refurbished now you could save up to 80% of these replacement costs.

BUND CASE STUDY - Cable and Wireless, London

The existing floor of a gas oil bund had broken down and the walls showed signs of deterioration and would need to be reinforced. The bund was obviously leaking and under the Oil Storage Guidelines this problem would have to be rectified. The storage tanks themselves were rusting and pitted and would require a tank lining system to extend their life expectancy.

A polyester GRP tank lining system was specified to eradicate the possibility of future leakage.

The damaged floor was dug out and all debris was removed from the bund. The bund and tanks were prepared in readiness for the lining system to be applied. All damaged areas of bund floor were repaired with resin concrete. The walls and floor areas were primed and a fibreglass matting with chemical resisting tissue veil was installed. Once cured, a resin wash was applied and all surfaces were carefully sanded to remove any irregularities. The bund was then sealed with an application of polyester gel coat to leave a durable, smooth and seamless finish. Three coats of flexible acrylic lining system were applied to the tanks. And the project was completed in three days.

TANK LINING CASE STUDY - Arjo Wiggins Paper Mill, Dartford

The challenge was to line 4 tanks including curing, during an 11-day shut down period.

The tank illustrated is a 100m² Braithwaite (panelled) effluent tank. It had several holes and despite numerous attempts by others, the leaks could not be stopped.

A 2-layer GRP lining system was specified as it is strong and durable but is also flexible enough to move with the tank (a characteristic of a Braithwaite tank). The tank was grit-blasted and cleaned internally, and the GRP lining system was applied to the walls and floor whilst the ceiling and all internal tie-bars were coated in an epoxy.
