Decommissioning and redeveloping a mechanical transport fuel installation at Sennybridge Training Area

Published: 8 July 2025

Landmarc faced a challenge at Sennybridge Training Area in Wales. They needed to decommission an old mechanical transport fuel installation (MTFI). This project involved isolating the existing setup, draining the fuel, thoroughly cleaning two underground diesel storage tanks, and then removing them from the ground.

Beyond removing the old installation, the project also required significant remedial works. This included backfilling the excavated areas and installing new channel drainage to the existing forecourt. The client also wanted new concrete hardstanding areas, preparing the site for possible future development.

Approach and implementation

Our team set up site welfare facilities and secured the working area with fencing. After isolating the installation, our mechanical and civil engineering specialists used a large 360-degree excavator to reduce the site level, giving us safe access to remove the tank manlids. Our local Swansea depot then sent a tanker and an operative to clean out the tanks. They removed all residual fuel and sludge, ensuring the tanks were gas-free.

After cleaning, they fully excavated and removed the tanks from the site. They then backfilled the extensive excavation with crushed stone and compacted it. The team installed new kerb edging around the site, separating the new hardstanding concrete areas from the adjoining landscaping. They also put in a new drainage channel, connecting it to the existing drainage system. Finally, they concreted the new hardstanding area and made good the existing surfaces.

Impact and outcomes

The work successfully removed any environmental risk that deterioration of the old underground storage tanks or their equipment posed.

We also left the site with strong potential for future development as a mechanical transport fuel installation, should new infrastructure be installed. This outcome provides the client with a safe, prepared site, ready for their strategic long-term plans.
