Water quality permits

Monitoring quality of water to ensure compliant discharge.

We help organisations who want to discharge to the foul sewer or watercourses by advising and supporting permit applications, permit variation applications, monitoring, and testing discharges for compliance with permits, so that their operation can remain compliant.

Discharge consents and permits are issued for both surface water and trade effluent for regulators to manage the amount or load of pollutant entering a receiving watercourse. Discharges to receiving watercourses are issued by the Environment Agency (EA), and discharges into the foul sewer are permitted by the sewer undertaker (typically the water company).

Our experts can ensure compliance in the following circumstances:

  • Trade effluent discharge consents and permitting
  • Surface water discharge consent and permitting

We provide sampling of continuous and temporal de-watering effluents up to a daily basis with advice on environmental permit variation and treatment of trade effluent.

Trade permits

Many businesses have processes producing trade effluents. These discharges will have quality conditions assigned and non-compliance can lead to prosecution and fines.

A trade effluent discharge consent is a legal document issued under the provisions of the Water Industry Act 1991.

There are over 100,000 environmental permits in place for consented discharges to controlled waters in the UK.

Our services

Our experts can design a monitoring programme according to your needs and conduct sampling and analysis. We also provide interpretation of results and advice in a comprehensive report. If required, we can provide advice of compliance failures and provide solutions for improving the quality of your effluent.

We collect samples up to a daily basis and analyse these at UKAS ISO 17025 accredited laboratories and report against permit limits. Fast turnarounds allow immediate reporting against set quality standards and immediate feedback for on-site production processes to satisfy conditions set by the regulator.

We conduct sampling of continuous and temporal de-watering effluents up to a daily basis and can also provide advice on environmental permit variation and treatment of trade effluent.
