UK habitat classification survey

Delivering expert UKHab surveys to support Biodiversity Net Gain and ecological restoration across the UK.

Our service providing UK Habitat Classification (UKHab) surveys allows for a robust, standardised approach to habitat classification and condition assessment across terrestrial and freshwater environments. We work with planners, developers, land managers, and conservation bodies to ensure that ecological value is not only preserved but enhanced. From small urban sites to large rural landscapes, we help you make informed, sustainable decisions that benefit both biodiversity and your project outcomes.

Whether you're a developer needing to meet Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) planning requirements or a landowner planning ecological restoration, our surveys offer the clarity and compliance you need.

Using the UK Habitat Classification system (Version 2.0), we accurately categorise, evaluate and map habitats, which can be input directly into the statutory biodiversity metric tool to calculate biodiversity units for habitats within a site. This allows for an accurate assessment of a development and allow for the most efficient and pragmatic advise to ensure your development achieves the mandatory 10% net gain across each habitat type, or to support long-term habitat enhancement goals.

What is UKHab?

The UK Habitat Classification (UKHab) has been published to provide an up-to-date replacement for the current industry standard, JNCC’s Phase 1 habitat survey method. Whilst the Phase 1 method is simple to apply, the criteria for classification of some habitats are not specified in detail and are open to interpretation. The UKhab survey is used to categorise habitats within the site boundary and record their distinctiveness. This allows for a detailed analysis of the habitat, and a more robust dataset when categorising an individual habitat. Furthermore, UKHab supports consistent habitat mapping and integrates with national datasets, making it ideal for ecological assessments, biodiversity monitoring, and planning for Biodiversity Net Gain. https://www.ukhab.org/

We offer a full suite of UKHab survey services, including:

  • Habitat mapping and classification using UKHab codes and secondary attributes
  • Condition assessments for use in the Biodiversity Metric
Baseline surveys for project feasibility assessment or planning application
  • Data analysis and reporting of BNG calculations for planning and restoration projects
  • GIS mapping and spatial data outputs
  • Expert advice on habitat enhancement and management strategies

UKhab surveys are typically conducted between April and September for optimal botanical accuracy.
