Safeguarding data centre continuity through strategic DSEAR risk assessment
Published: 2 February 2026
A major data centre operator partnered with our team to assess hydrogen gas risks from battery storage systems across ten sites, achieving DSEAR compliance and peace of mind through proactive, evidence-led assurance.
Framing the challenge
A major data centre operator approached us with a concern regarding their backup power systems. Across ten key sites, large battery banks were in place to ensure uninterrupted power supply. These batteries, essential for business continuity, produce hydrogen gas during charging, which is a potential explosive hazard under the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR).

Despite the scale and critical nature of the infrastructure, no DSEAR risk assessment had been conducted. The client needed a clear understanding of the risks and assurance that their systems were compliant and safe.
Approach and implementation
Our team began by conducting a thorough site review, engaging directly with on-site staff and reviewing existing policies and procedures. This collaborative approach ensured we captured both operational realities and technical details.
We then produced a tailored DSEAR risk assessment, focusing on the hydrogen generation risk associated with the battery charging process. The assessment evaluated the likelihood of hazardous atmospheres forming and the effectiveness of existing control measures.

Impact and outcomes
The assessment revealed that the client had already implemented sufficient ventilation systems across all sites, effectively mitigating the risk of hydrogen accumulation. As a result, the overall risk was deemed low, and no further action was required.
This outcome provided the client with peace of mind that their operations were compliant with DSEAR. It also gave them a documented basis of safety for internal assurance and external audits, along with confidence in the robustness of their existing safety systems.
By addressing the issue proactively, the client avoided potential regulatory scrutiny and reinforced their commitment to safety and compliance.
